The whole area was in its geological beginnings, under the sea. That is why you find so many fossils everywhere in the perigord, even in some of the stones that make up the walls of Haute-Rive. With time, many caves and hollow cavities were formed by nature, as the sea receded. In the neighboring area of Haute-Rive you will find amazing caves like the "Grottes de Maxange", near the village of Le Buisson de Cadouin ( 5.5 miles / 8.8 Km's to the west), the "Gouffre de Proumeyssac" (8.5 miles/ 13.5 Km's to the north), the "Grotte de Domme", under the covered marketplace of Domme (15 miles / 24 Km's).
